New for 2012

Hi All

With the new year firmly in, we are now settled at the Brentwood Centre with both lessons running well on a Wednesday (Mixed Martial Arts) & Friday (Judo).

We are now members of the All England Judo Federation. This is a large and growing Judo organisation that has clubs from all over the country.

On the 29th January 7 of our members attended a London Region competition hosted by the Docklands Dragons Judo Club. This competition was attended by over 260 competitors from all over the country, and the Georgian National Squad was there.

The Juniors that attended were; Thomas Lee, Louis Freeman, Kameron Morgan, Nathan Aldous & Ben Aldous. All of these students fought very hard and extremely well and place just under the medals. All of the instructors were proud of them considering that the top fights from most organisations including the AEJF, BJA and BJC MAC were there.

Medals were won by Chris Ridgewell in the intermediate men's category, and by Michael Green in the Heavy weight Dan grades category.

This is an excellent start to the year, and we have now started an invite only competition training mat to help those who wish to compete at these competitions. We have also made this mat free of charge for those we invite.

We are also preparing some of our students to attend a national grading being held in October.

National Trampoline Gala results at Hatfield

All six of Brentwood Trampoline Club's members travelling to Hatfield for this gala had cause for nerves, with Lauren & Lucy never having competed at National level before, Chrissie & Susanna venturing into FIG B for the first time, Kensie having hurt her foot the previous day and Josh determined to get back to FIG B. In the event there was at least cause for future confidence with either medals, qualification to finals or good experience to take away with them. The weekend ended with two winners, one third placed and 4 qualifying to national finals. Regional Trampoline Grading - Brentwood Trampoline Results

This competition, hosted by Brentwood Trampoline on 22nd January, saw the highest entry most can recall with an entry of nearly 370 and over 330 actually competing on the day. Brentwood Trampoline had 45 competing, once again the largest contingent in a regional grading competition. The day saw many of Brentwood Trampoline's members competing at a new grade for the first time and so expectations were cautiously optimistic in the most part:

Netball goes Regional

Brentwood Netball Club played its first ever game at East of England Regional Level on Sunday 15th January. Our U14s travelled to Cranfield University in Bedford to represent Essex against Bedfordshire U14 Champions CHILTERN GIRLS, who were unbeaten in Bedfordshire for 2 seasons at their own age group, and we proudly left the game as 47 – 24 Winners with a powerhouse display that left Bedfordshire stunned!

Jackie French, together with her assistant for the day Sue Peters, selected a Squad for the game of :Lily Ball, Jess Love, Georgina Oliver, Sophie Moody, Claudia Meister, Georgia Macalle, Danielle Kenyon, Holly Perkins.

This is an amazing achievement for a club in just our 3rd Season and is a tribute to not only the players, but to our entire coaching staff that are delivering top teams in all year groups.

When starting this club in 2009/10 season I hoped we might get to a possible Regional Level entry within 5 years, but to see what our girls and club coaches have achieved in less than 50% of that timescale is sensational !!!!!!

Change of Venue

Hi All

Well that's time has gone quick from September till now and so far we have made the following changes;

Revamped our existing website - www.kkmaa.co.uk

Formed a new website dedicated to the Mixed Martial Arts section of our academy - www.kkmaa.co.uk/brentwood

Also as from January 2012 all of our lessons will now be at the Brentwood Centre. This we are sure is going to be in the best interest of our Academy and look forward to a bright future at this new prestigious venue.

We are also looking forward at running some competitions in 2012 now we have a venue that can accomodate our needs.

Schools' East Region Trampoline Championships 2011

With one of Brentwood Trampoline's biggest entries at schools for some time 19 members were representing their schools at this competition and 14 of them have secured places at the Zonal finals in Shrewsbury in January where they will compete against others from the Midlands regions and Wales. Members did particularly well in the Elite groups taking all 4 girls titles available. The total haul of trophies was as follows:

Winners - Maddison Merritt (U11 Elite), Olivia Watson (U13 Elite), Susanna Badley (U15 Elite) & Chrissie Law (U19 Elite), Under 11 Novice Team from Long Ridings (Sophie Tyrrell, Mia Gray & Erin Wells) and Under 15 Elite team from Cooper Coborn (Susanna Badley, Lucy Phillips, Emma Brereton & Ellie Guy)
Second place - Faith Everett (U11 Elite), Ramiyah Kendall (U11 Novice)
Third place - Georgia Tyrrell (U11 Elite)

There were also some very close misses with Sophie Tyrrell just 0.1 off 3rd place in U11 Novice, Emma Heptinstall just 0.1 behind Sophie in 5th and Lauren Michaels just 0.3 behind Lucy in the U13 Elite. Eric visits 12th Annual Brentwood Open

The Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles, Member of Parliament for Brentwood and Ongar, was the surprise VIP guest at the 12th annual Open Trampoline Competition hosted by Brentwood Trampoline Club at the Brentwood School Sports Centre. Attracting nearly 300 entries from around the East & London regions, competing in 29 different classes, this is one of the largest events of its kind every year and also keeps alive the memory of Georgia Cordery with two trophies available for those showing the highest quality form.

With competitors ranging in ability from raw beginners competing at I grade to national standard competing at B & C grades the day offered a wide range of experience for the audience with many youngsters in their first competition delighting the audience and judges alike. The top end of competition was more demanding with many of those competing at grade C & above expecting to be in the hunt for the prestigious Georgia Cordery trophies.
Eric Pickles said:

"I was very surprised to see so many people here. It is a much larger event than I thought it would be and I am impressed with the amount of organisation that has obviously gone into producing a very successful competition. It is particularly good to see so many young people enjoying their sport."

Later Mr Pickles was pleased to be able to present some trophies and team awards including (see picture) those for Vanessa Lewis (right) and Abbie-Jo Goldsmith (left) taking 1st & 2nd in the Over-15 E grade joined by Nicola Miller (centre) to take team gold as well.

For the third year running, both Georgia Cordery trophies were won by members of Brentwood Trampoline Club with Kensie Sherlock taking the over-13 trophy (Brentwood's Lauren Michaels in 3rd place) and Joshua Newman taking the under-13 with Georgia Tyrrell & Maddison Merrittt (both only grade E) making it a Brentwood 1-2-3. The club was also pleased with its overall results with 16 individual trophy winners, 5 team winners and almost too many new personal best scores to count. Brentwood Trampoline Club had cause for celebration last weekend following a long day at Easton College, Norwich. The event was just one of four British Gymnastics grading competitions held each year where performers have the opportunity to prove their ability to move onwards to higher grade competition. For this reason the club's Head Coach, Paul Kitchen was delighted that 26 of the club's competitors had made the long journey as he says:

"It's a long way to go but an important journey to make to test the competitor, and their family's, resolve since when they qualify to National competition the journeys become longer and involve overnight stays."

Paul was equally pleased with the results with 15 of Brentwood's competitors achieving the targets needed for qualification giving a 58% success rate against a competition average of just 34%. Of course, the club also gained a fair share of trophies with 12 individual podium places and 3 winning teams - full details of the individual success stories are on the clubs website at www.brentwoodtc.org/easton_16oct11.htm.

The next challenge for the club is to host its annual Open Competition at their training base in Brentwood School Sports Centre where they are expecting nearly 300 competitors to be chasing, among other awards, the Georgia Cordery Form trophies for under-13 and over-13 trampolinists. These trophies are awarded each year to those who display the highest quality skills, rather than difficulty, and are in memory of Georgia Cordery.

For national trampolinists, the culmination of their efforts throughout the competition season is to attend the National Finals and the icing on the cake is to make the finals day having ended in the top-8 following the preliminary rounds on the first day. For 3 Brentwood Trampoline Club members this past weekend was their chance to show just how good they were as the finals were held in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

For the past 3 years Chrissie Law, from Brentwood, has made the Finals but missed out on finals day achieving a best result of 29th last year; this year, however, she has stepped up a gear and was more confident having finalled consistently in the gala competitions she had attended making 4th place on a few occasions. For Susanna Badley, from Harold Wood, and Josh Newman, from Noak Bridge, this was to be their first experience having only graduated from regional competition last October.

Competing in the NIA is a daunting experience as each group of competitors walk into the huge arena from behind the curtained training area to music and loud clapping from audience and officials alike and many find their nerves begin to take hold at this point. This year the three Brentwood Trampoline Club members overcame all nerves and put on a wonderful display on the qualifying day to impress the judges with their great form and saw all three move into finals day in top three places. Chrissie, in particular, had excelled posting all new personal best scores in her efforts to put past years disappointments behind her.

Finals day and and there was plenty of time for nerves to build up as other finals went before them but finally time came for Susanna & Josh to compete in their respective groups, Chrissie had longer for nerves to build as her final was later in the day. All three, however, prevailed with Susanna becoming under-15 girls National C champion, Josh under-13 boys National C champion and Chrissie taking 3rd place in the under-19 girls National C with yet another personal best score.

Brentwood Trampoline Club takes its competitive training seriously and so work resumes throughout the summer period towards next years competition season, (unlike many other youth groups) the club remains open throughout the summer period for both competitive and recreational trampolining and regularly has pay-as-you-go spaces. Trampolining - National Finalists

Jack Kelly, England National Development Coach for British Gymnastics and erstwhile coach to no less than two former world champions, popped in to Brentwood Trampoline Club this week to oversee the final preparation of the club's 3 National Finallists. The Nationals, taking place next weekend(23rd/24th July) at the NIA in Birmingham, is the culmination of every gymnasts competitive year and based on their performances this year all three stand a good chance of winning a medal.

Pictured with Jack are Chrissie Law, 17, from Brentwood who will be competing in the Under-19 Ladies national C finals, Josh Newman, 12, from Noak Bridge who will be competing in the Under-13 Boys national C and Susanna Badley, 13, from Hornchurch who will be competing in the Under-15 Girls national C.

All three have trained with Brentwood from their very early days in trampolining and have progressed through the grading system delighting audiences wherever they compete with the elegance of their style - a trademark of the club which prides itself on high-quality above all else.

... and the first recognition award winner was Jordana Brown. Jordana is a Year 10 (aged 15) member who is passionate about her sport and is an active member of not only her own aged group team "TIGERS" but is also a key member of our Ladies League squad the WILDCATS.

Since joining the club she has qualified as an umpire and regularly officiates for our younger teams, where she has now started to assist at coaching and acts as a team manager at many of the Under 9s games.

Jordana is now seeking to enrol onto a UKCC coaching course, and we have no doubt she will soon be gaining her first qualification as a club coach.

Easton Open Trampoline Competition

Yesterday Brentwood Trampoline Club had 15 competitors travel to the outskirts of Norwich for an Open competition hosted by Dragons. Following hot on the heels of the grading they hosted last weekend the accent of this event was on fun with Synchro as well as Individual competitions. The outcome exceeded all expectations with no less than 7 of the 15 winning their individual groups, two coming 2nd and another 3rd. The synchro was slightly less succesful though with one 2nd placed pair and two 3rd placed and another member in 2nd place in the Russian Roulette. Wow, what a day for BTC in the Brentwood Grading - well done to all our competitors for doing their best and, in the main, succeeding. More details (and pictures in due course) online on our website but to give you an idea of how well they did, how about these statistics:

Brentwood Hockey Club - End of Season Report

An uninterrupted second half of the season at Brentwood Hockey Club has brought us a number of superb team performances with no fewer than 4 teams gaining promotion into higher leagues and only 1 team being relegated.

All four of the promotion gaining teams came second in their respective leagues and they were the Ladies 2nd, the Ladies 3rd, the Mens 2nd and the Mens 4th.

The Men’s 1st XI were the only side to move in the opposite direction and they were still in it up to 4 weeks before the end of the season when a run of disappointing results saw them falter at the last hurdle. With a number of very promising youngsters on the way through and the reinstatement of the manager position on the sideline next year could see a hoped for immediate return to the higher league.

The Ladies 1st XI have consolidated their position and came in a creditable 6th place with everything to look forward to in the autumn. Thanks must go to Paul Johnson and his team of managers and coaches so thank you Tim, Tony, Forbie, Neil, Jo, Richard and Will and their band of helpers.

With the Summer Leagues all due to commence in May we are keen to welcome new faces at the club whether that be players returning to the game, beginners wanting to give hockey a try or youngsters who are looking for an enjoyable team game played with vigour and respect.

Munich Awards 2011

Another great success for Chief Instructor Peter Green & Instructor Michael Green when they visited Munich, Germany in March.

They were invited to attend the Munich Hall of Honour, organised by the United Self Defense Federation. Whilst there, Peter Green conducted a Combat Judo Seminar for people from all over Europe. Combat judo differs greatly from sport judo in that we teach to directly defend and throw from being attacked either by kicks, punches, grabs or weapons and various other forms of attack.

Also Chief Instructor Peter Green was awarded Master of the Year 2011, and Michael Green was awarded Instructor of the Year 2011. Their names have been entered into the Hall of Honour listings held in Munich. This is the second year in a row that both Michael & Peter have achieved these awards.

Next year the academy is hoping to get some students out to the event and nominate some for an award.

Master Peter Green is due to go back out to Germany in the Summer, and has now been invited to teach in other countries as well, including Switzerland, Austria, and Scotland.

Highly qualified trampolinists at Gillingham

Three Brentwood Trampoline Club members enjoyed the short journey to Gillingham last weekend before notching up a highly impressive set of results and raising many an eyebrow as they set a quality benchmark.

Susanna Badley was first of the three to compete in one of the first groups of the day. With 48 Under-15 Girls National C competitors it was a long wait until the end result was known but from the beginning she didn't relinquish her lead. With a 0.5 advantage after the set round she pulled away further after the voluntary, now 1.3 clear and yet more in the final round ending 2.2 clear of the second placed girl despite her having a 1 point tariff advantage. As well as the win she also gained an Enhanced Score qualification to FIG B competition and 3 new personal best scores.

Joshua Newman was competing next in the 14-strong boys equivalent group. having had a niggling injury in the preceding weeks he was planning on simply repeating his set routine in the voluntary rounds giving him a 2 to 3 point tariff disadvantage against the main contenders. Despite this he was in 2nd place after the set and posting consistently higher form marks than others maintained that position to the end. As with Susanna, Josh's performance was also rewarded with an Enhanced Score qualification to FIG B and 2 new personal bests.

Chrissie Law was competing in the Under-19 Ladies National C class. After the set round she was lying in 1st place, the voluntary round, however, saw her maintain excellent form scores higher than all her nearest rivals but fall back to 3rd place as opponents with nearly 2 clear marks of tariff advantage overhauled her. In the final round Chrissie maintained her form with nobody getting close but, once again, higher tariffs held sway and she ended in 4th place - in a group of 40 an excellent return capped nicely with a FIG B qualification as well as 2 new personal bests.

Kime Ki Martial Arts Academy

Hi Everyone

We have had a very busy 6 months since our last update.

Firstly, we have move our classes and time around. Our Mixed Martial Arts Class that was on Sunday afternoons is now on a Wednesday evening between 7pm & 8pm. The classes are now in the Event Bar at the Brentwood Centre.

We have also started a Family Judo class, so if any parents out there wish to participate in the sport of Judo along with their children they now can, and at a reduced rate. All the details are on our website www.kkmaa.co.uk

The reason for moving the classes was so that our students can attend competitions and Seminars.

On the 30th January 2011 Kime Ki Martial Arts Academy hosted the very first seminar by the new and upcoming organisation The Guild of Independent Martial Arts. This organisation is focused on help & support for martial arts instructors all over the united kingdom. The Seminar was on 'Power Kicks' and was run by chairperson Haydn Bridgeland, who runs Apex Martial Arts in Nottingham.

It was a fantastic 3 hour seminar that was attended by people from all over the UK. Including Mr Dave Lee from the Disable Martial Arts Association (DMAA). Dave was there to work on his katas for his next Black belt. He was being assisted by sensei Murray Mcpherson from Acacia Martial arts. They other instructors helping on the seminar were Lucy Bridgleland and Florance Sassoul.

On the 6th February, we took 7 students to a competition hosted by the All England Judo Federation. All five of our 8 years and under students had never attended a competition before. They did extremely well, and gained the following medals; William Stockford - Silver, Kamaron Morgan - Silver, Louis Freeman - 1st Bronze, Noah Neal - 1st Bronze, Tom Thornton - 2nd Bronze. They all made us really proud.

The other two students were also ion a new category as they had become seniors. They both turned 16 over the Xmas period and competed with the adults. They both did great and gained the following medals; Chris Ridgewell - 1st Bronze and Sonny Whitaker - 2nd Bronze.

We have many more competition to attend this year, and have a lot of instructors from all over the country asking if we can host a seminar for then.

Its going to be a busy 2011.

Brentwood Trampoline Club are delighted to announce that, following their 3rd annual review since being the first trampoline club in Essex to achieve GymMark, they have once again been found to be operating in accordance with all of British Gymnastics guidelines. As well as being one of the strongest competitive clubs in the region this further assures members and the public that they operate in a safe, effective and child-friendly manner as well.

Brentwood Trampoline Club members’ saw success in yesterdays Regional Schools competition in Harlow and will be travelling to Cardiff in the new year for the Zonal finals. Individual qualifiers were winners of their respective Elite age groups Chrissie Law (Brentwood School), Susanna Badley (Coopers Company & Coborn) & Maddison Merritt (Downham CofE Primary) being joined by Lauren Michaels (Gaynes) taking third place (behind Susanna). Others qualifying in their age group Elite team events were Lucy Phillips, Emma Brereton & Ellie Guy (all Coopers Company & Coborn).

Brentwood Netball Club celebrated its first season with a dinner at Stock Brook Manor Golf Club where 160 guests helped to raise £8,000 to support the Town's new and only Junior Netball club.

Guest of Honour was Maggie Jackson, Head Coach of Sky Sports 3, Superleague team MAVERICKS, who had just returned from the Commonwealth Games as Manager of England’s Bronze Medal winning team in Delhi 2010.

Together with other representatives of Mavericks, Essex County Netball Coaches plus staff and players from Brentwood NC, a fun evening enabled all involved a chance to meet in a relaxed atmosphere and hear words of encouragement for the growth of both the club itself and Junior Netball in the region.

It was a return to her roots for Maggie Jackson who originates from Essex and spent many years as a sports teacher in the Brentwood area at Anglo European School and therefore has a great understanding of the local needs and the potential it holds for young netballers and clubs.

Colin Meister, founder of the club, gave a brief introduction informing of the problems encountered launching in an area where netball facilities outside of school are almost non-existent, especially when compared to neighbours in Chelmsford and Basildon.
He went on to thank those in the club and community who have worked so hard to ensure the project has succeeded and confirmed that with 140 girls aged 9 – 16 registered they hoped some more trophies will soon follow on from those won in its inaugural year.

Regional trampoline grading competition results

It was a long journey there and back to Easton College, west of Norwich, for some lasting most of the day following a breakdown, but it was worth the trek.

With 21 competing on the day we had 14 trophies (and 7 medals), 14 improved personal best scores and 9 qualifiers!

New Classes

Hi All

The academy now has been lent a trailor for our mats. It was received with great thanks from Apex Martial Arts in Nottingham. This means that we can now open more classes in the Brentwood Area.

We are opening at the Brentwood Centre on the 13th Oct. This will be for Judo (5yrs to 15yrs is 6pm to 7pm, Adults will be from 7pm to 8pm).

We have also made contact with a Mauy Thai Boxer who is going to run classes on Wednesdays for Adults which will be from 8pm to 9pm.

Brentwood Hockey Club

The new Hockey Season has started. There have been a mixed bag of results so far. League matches are played every Saturday and training takes place at Sawyers Hall College as follows:

Under 18s Training (Boys and Girls) - Tuesdays 7pm to 8pm
Ladies Club Training - Tuesdays 7.30pm to 9pm
Ladies 1st and 2nd Team Training - Tuesdays 8pm to 10pm
Mens Club Training - Wednesdays 7.30pm to 9pm
Mens 1st and 2nd Team Training - 8pm to 10pm
Minis hockey (ages 5 - 13 yrs) takes place at Sawyers Hall College every Sunday 10am to 12pm.

Brentwood Open Trampoline Competition

The timetable and officials list can now be downloaded from Brentwood Trampoline Club's website. With nearly 300 entries we have extended to 4 panels (panel 1 with a choice of 4x4 & 6x4 and all others with 6x4s). The centre will be busy so please do try to ensure that you arrive in plenty of time, overflow parking is available at the Town Hall just round the corner from the centre.

The programme is set up to ensure that the middle of the day and the middle panels display the highest grade gymnasts so, if you are new to trampolining or just want to take a look to see what it is all about, schedule your day to be there between 12:00 and 2:30 on 26th September. Georgia Cordery Form Trophies will also be presented on the day, this year by way of a memorial for this courageous teenager who died earlier this year.

Regional Event 15th August 2010

Two of our students attended a regional Amatuer MMA event in Peterborough. This was specifically for amatuer MMA fighters to gain experience under a cage enviroment.

Michael Green and Martin Green both did extremely well in thier bouts. Micheal lost the first two but managed to win his last fight to gain a Bronze medal.

Martin did excellently by winning his first contest, but unfortunely did not win his others and place forth.

Both Students performed very well, and we have been invited back to their next event.

Our MMA classes run on Sundays at the Brentwood Centre 2 - 4pm. (we are closed until 12th september due to holidays). Ages are 12yrs and over. T Shirts, Shorts, groin gaurd and gum shild will be needed to train.

Kime Ki Martial Arts Academy had its six monthly grading on the 9th July for its Friday evening classes. The students performed excellently. They all worked hard over the last few months on the syllabus that is implimented at the academy.

The students learn the techniques and the japanese names for each technique. The results are as follows;

We would like to say a special thank you to Andy Nice. He lives in Colchester, and picks up Dan & Steve from Witham on Fridays & Sundays to travel down to train with us. Andy is a very dedicated student.

We would also like to thank to Matt for helping out so well at the grading. Matt only started with us a few weeks ago. Matt came to the 'come and try ' session at the Brentwood Centre which was arranged by the Sports Council as the Festival of Sports.

Classes on a Friday have now closed until 10th September. However classes on a Sunday at the Brentwood Centre will continue during the summer school holidays. These classes are for anyone over the age of 12. This is a Ground Grappling class and teaches you to survive when taken to the ground.

Hi all. We have had a busy few months expanding our classes to incorporate a ground grappling class on Sunday Afternoons at the Brentwood Centre. There are many classes for all ages and abilities so please contact us if you are interested.

In March, Sensei Peter Green was awarded his Master level by Self Defense Germany. Also Michael Green was awarded UK Instructor of the Year. Both had to travel to Munich Germany to receive their awards.

Whilst there we were invited to run a Combat Judo seminar for Self Defense Germany. We did this on the 25^th June.

It was so successful the academy has now been invited to join Self Defense Germany, which we have now done. The academy can now offer its students international grade recognition.

Brentwood Hockey Club Pre-Season

Brentwood Hockey Club are currently preparing for the new hockey season which is due to start in September this year.

Some members are regularly visiting the gym, going for runs in the park, swimming and cycling to get themselves fit and ready. Others are still enjoying the break by enjoying BBQs in the sun and beers in the pub!

Congratulations to Brentwood Third Eleven (pictured) who were presented with the League Winners Trophy for the East Division Five South East Division last season. A mixture of old heads and young legs combined well to see off a strong challenge from Southend Second Team to win the league by a clear 6 points and with a goal difference of 60 goals.

Brentwood Trampoline Club - Results

Brentwood Trampoline Club members exceeded expectations at the British Gymnastics' Eastern Region grading competition held in Ipswich last weekend.

With 20 of its members competing on the day no less that 16 took individual medals with a further two also joining in a winning team result. Several also achieved personal best scores. The club was also the only one at the competition to see members achieving so-called 'leap-frog' qualifications whereby the performer is qualified to compete two grades higher than their present grade in a future grading.

With 4 grades, G to D, competing in a number of age groups the club saw success at every level:

Grade G - Under 13 girls - winner Maddison Merritt and 3rd place Kendra Sherlock joined by Lauren Bembrick-Taylor & Tegan Roycroft as team winners. Maddison also leap-frog qualified to E and Kendra qualified to F, both with new personal best scores;
Grade G - Over 15 girls - winner Natalie Shade who also qualified to F with new personal best scores;
Grade F - Under 13 girls - winner Lauren Michaels and 2nd placed Lucy Phillips, both also securing new personal best scores and leap-frog qualification to D;
Grade F - Under 15 girls - Emma Brereton took 3rd place with a new personal best score;
Grade F - Under 15 boys - Joseph Dulieu-Hasler took 3rd place;
Grade E - Under 13 girls - Georgia Lewis took 3rd place;
Grade E - Under 13boys - winner Josh Newman;
Grade E - Under 15 boys - winner Kallum Sherlock;
Grade E - Over 15 girls - winner Lauren Marchant followed by Abbie Goldsmith in 2nd place;
Grade D - Under 15 girls - Kensie Sherlock in 2nd place followed by Susannah Badley in 3rd, Kensie also scored new personal bests, Kensie also received an invitation to trial at National C;
Grade D - Under 19 boys - winner Daniel Frost who also received an invitation to trial at National C;
Grade D - Over 19 ladies - Emma Frost 2nd place.

Paul Kitchen, the club's Head Coach said "these results are attributable to the detail attention we pay to good form in our club. This has shown to give good results for several years now with the club having a good track record of producing successful national & even international performers."

Early season has seen Brentwood Trampoline Club rack up lots of success with:

7 of its members winning through to the National Schools Finals;
13 members winning trophies in the recent Regional Grading hosted by the club; and
2 members taking 1st & 2nd places in a recent national competition (separated only on a tie break rule)

It has been another busy few months for our academy. The student have been working toward their next grading which will be in February 2010, and also competitions due to take place in February (UKJA Eastern Region) and in May (Black Belt International European Championships)

Sensei Peter Green attended an International Training Weekend, hosted by Black Belt International at the Hilton Hotel in Bradford. He attained the award of Instructor of the year, and an International Award for dedication to Martial Arts. For the promotional videos, please visit the Malympex321 Channel on You Tube.

More importantly, due to the hard work and dedication of all the students, instructors and volunteers, our academy is now a Black Belt International Centre of Excellence.

Schools Trampolining

Sunday 6th December saw a number of Brentwood Trampoline Club members competing at Mark Hall School, Harlow in the regional British Schools Gymnastics Association annual Trampoline competition. With over 400 entries only the top 3 individuals from each group, and top 2 teams, progress to the Zonal Finals in Nottingham on January 17th.

The clubs successful members were:

Charlotte Webb representing Kesgrave HS, winning under 15 Elite;
Daniel Frost, representing King Edward 6th Grammar, taking 3rd place in the under 19 Elite;
Kensie Sherlock & Rebecca Martin, representing St Martins, members of the 2nd placed under 13 Elite team;
Maddison Merritt, representing Downham C of E, winning the under 11 Novice;
Susanna Badley, representing Coopers Coborn, winning the under 13 Novice;
Fiona Humphries, representing Brentwood School, taking 2nd place in the under 13 Novice.

The Zonal round brings together the successful competitors from Eastern, East Midlands, West Midlands & Wales with the qualifiers from that competition then progressing to the National Finals.

The Flog It! team visits Brentwood Trampoline Club

Brentwood School & Brentwood Trampoline Club were pleased to welcome the BBC's Flog It! team recently with it's presenter Paul Martin. This popular antiques programme regularly includes a segment on some item of historical interest in the local area. Their interest had been stimulated by the history article on Brentwood Trampoline Club's website which showed how a local man, Ted Blake, made significant contributions to the development of competitive trampolining. All being well the show, which should be broadcast next year, will show Tim Blake (Ted's son) being interviewed in the school's library and Hannah McCann and Scott Gregory being interviewed and also performing for Paul in the Courage Hall. Apparently one of Paul's fond memories of his school-days features the school trampoline on which he recalls doing somersaults. Pictured are Tim, Scott, Paul & Hannah.

Brentwood Trampoline Club - Regional Grading Results

We had a long day on this Sunday with a 2-hour journey each way to and from Easton on the far side of Norwich and experienced some high emotions at times but we still got some decent results.

Three winners were Sophie Banks, Jospeh Dulieu-Hasler and Kallum Sherlock, four third-placed were Jonathan Gibbs, Jamie Perry, Abbie Goldmsith & Kensie Sherlock (Kensie on zero final) and although not making a podium position, Emma Martin qualified to grade F. Georgia Tyrrell also got closer to qualifying with two new PBs.

Kime Ki Martial Arts Academy Update

It’s been a busy few weeks for the academy. Two weeks ago, we took 9 students to a regional competition in Epping. There were 7 juniors and 2 senior competitors. Everyone fought really well including 3 students new to competitions. They all came away with a medal totalling together 9 bronzes and 3 gold’s.

At the competition Sensei Peter Green (Middle) was approached by two other club instructors who were highly impressed with Sonny Whitaker. So much so Sonny was awarded his Green Belt.

Also New classes have started on a Sunday afternoon. These classes are Groundwork Grappling, Tai Jutsu and Mixed Martial Arts. These classes are training sessions to prepare the students for the upcoming Malympex in May 2010. We are hoping to take a squad to the event hosted by Black belt International. This will be the European Open Championships. The event is attended by national and international clubs. We will be entering students in the MMA & light continuous and the new Groundwork Grappling categories.

Student climbs the route to success

A senior student of Kime Ki Martial Arts successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro last week and raised £650 for new mats for the academy. Malcolm Hazel, who is also the Sensei for ‘The Way of The Ronin Martial Arts Academy’ in Witham, Essex climbed the 5-day route of the mountain. He is now one of the 27 percent successful climbers who take this route.

Along with him, he took a teddy bear, which is going to be raffled, and a signed Japanese flag. The signatures on the flag included stars such as Silvio Simac (Transporter 3, DOA & Unleashed), Brendan Carr (Ten Dead Men) and Chris Jones (Blood, the last Vampire).

On the up & up

Also many badges were sown onto the flag from clubs and academies from all over the country. These include Apex Martial Arts, Way of the Ronin, World Judo Alliance, British National Martial Arts, Shimways Jujisu, Black Belt International, plus many more, and of course our own Kime Ki Martial Arts Academy.

The flag is now staying up the mountain, and Malcolm is arranging for anyone who climbs the mountain to have a picture with the flag and send it to us.

We at the academy are lost for words. The dedication, spirit and true courage Malcolm has shown in not only climbing the mountain, but taking the 5 day route, and raising so much money for the new mats that the academy now enjoys.

Does CRB = Crazy Rules, Barmy?

There has been a lot of press coverage recently concerning upcoming changes in the rules regarding protection of young people and vulnerable adults (effective October). In particular it has been hyped that if you have a lift-sharing arrangement with another family that you will need to be vetted before you can take them in your car. It has also been put forward that this could be a cynical money raising exercise to tax volunteers. This is not entirely accurate.

Any arrangement that families make concerning transport of their kids or, indeed, other activities, is entirely between them unless it is instigated or otherwise controlled by a club or other organisation. So, if your child's club asked you to take other parents' kids to an away match (as an example) then the club is responsible for ensuring that you are checked before you are able to fulfil the request, if however, parents simply colected together and made the travelling arrangements between themselves then no such registration is necessary.

As for the hidden tax issue, CRB checks are free for volunteers although some governing bodies (like mine unfortunately) will impose a small admin charge (£6 in the case of British Gymnastics) for processing them - this would normally be borne by the club of course.

One thing that is true, though, is that it is the club who will be held accountable and so if a club knowingly employs a person or make use of a volunteer in a role that is deemed to be regulated then the club will itself be committing an offence.

National Trampoline Championships

Whilst many of us were heading away on our summer holidays, five Brentwood Trampoline Club members were heading to the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham for the British National Finals. All had qualified to be there during the year by achieving qualification through competition and this grand gala event was the culmination of their competition year.

Hannah McCann won the Under-15 National C competition with Charlotte Webb in the same group finishing 23rd following a slip in her vol;
Stephen Page came 4th in the Under-19 FIG B competition with Scott Gregory (recovering from flu) simply running out of steam in his vol and finishing in 30th place;
Chrissie Law ended in 59th place in the Under-19 National C.

Brentwood Hockey Club

With the new season fast approaching Brentwood Hockey Club is looking to build on the successes from last season which saw three teams gain promotion, two as champions (see photo of Ladies 1st Team).

With three squads stepping up into higher leagues and the other teams within the club looking to build on a strong season and league position last year it looks to be an exciting 2009/10 for Brentwood.

The club has seven men's teams, including a youth side called "The Academy", and five ladies' teams to field each week, as well as a strong youth and minis-section.

The men's and ladies' first XI teams play in the second and third tier of the East League respectively.

Starting their preparations early, the men have begun pre-season fitness training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and the ladies on Wednesday evenings at the Brentwood County Ground.

Pre-season friendlies will start at the beginning of September, ready for when the season begins for the ladies on September 19, with the men starting a week later.

Academy Club Activity Day

Brentwood Academy Club Activity Day.

The first ever Academy club activity day is to be held next Friday (10th July 2009) at the Brentwood centre.

There will be many different sports for Year 6 primary children to come and try with their school.

The children will work around a circuit of all the activities on offer and spend 20 minutes on each. This is to give them a taster of each sport and a local club to join if they really enjoyed it.

It will be a really great day and plenty of fun for all those invoved.

Brentwood Buccaneers take on the Colchester Badgers

BRENTWOOD BUCCANEERS TAKE ON THE COLCHESTER BADGERS

Brentwood Buccaneers (the Brentwood Cricket Club 20/20 team) beat Orsett in the quarter finals of the group stage of the 20/20 competition on 18th June. Mascots were Jack Warman and Will Daly (pictured with the team).
The semi final is to be held on Friday 10th July at Brentwood Cricket Club (The Old County Ground) when the Buccaneers face the Colchester Badgers - the only team to have beaten Brentwood in the league this year and the team that knocked them out last year - it is all to play for.
All are welcome so come along for a fantastic evening of 20/20 cricket. There will be a barbecue, music, raffles and a prize draw. Mascots for this round are Millie Jackson and Will Davey.

Brentwood Trampoline Club - Open Competition Results

What a great half day this was for some of our keener young members. Held at the Gainsborough Sports centre in Ipswich this competition focussed on the lower Club and Regional grades and our members came away with a nice haul of trophies. With just 10 members making it there on the day all bar 2 came away with a trophy or medal and those who didn't were pleased with their performances.

Brentwood (actually Brentwood Buccaneers for this competition!) are taking on Orsett in a 20/20 knockout cup competition at 5:30pm on Thursday 18th June. Two Colts – Jack Warman and Will Daly who won the competition to name our 20/20 side will be mascots on the night and there will be a bar, bbq, raffle and prize draw on the night. Come and enjoy the fun of 20/20 cricket – all welcome.

Swimming Club update

Rachel Franklin and Nicole Gibbs have been selected to represent Essex in the Inter Counties Championships this summer. Grace Gilroy, Sophie Hemmingway, Rianna Smith and Chris Garlick have all achieved qualifying times for the East Region Championships and will be competing in Norwich this month.

Brentwood School fencers had a great weekend at the British Youth Championship in Telford enlisting a team of eight school fencers, who previously qualified for the event via their regional championships, in the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 events.

Josefine Engel, Year 12, won the girls U16 event, carving her way through the field with steely determination. Josefine cruised through the knockout stages, demolishing some of the top British foilists with her fast feet and accurate point-work.

In the final she faced Alex Craig, the British number 1 and defending champion, in her closest fight of the day. The girls traded hits with the scores level at 7-7 at the break. David Taylor, Brentwood School's Head Coach, gave her some tactical advice which resulted in Josefine turning out a comfortable victory at 15-10. The new National Champion said, "Winning the Nationals is a great feeling and I'd like to thank my coach and team mates for supporting me through the day."

The future looks good for fencing at the school with Jessica Love and Fleur Sumption finishing in the top 16 of the girls U12's and Max Saunders making the Top 32.

David Taylor summed up the weekend by saying, "Josefine fenced well and deserved to win. If she continues to work hard we will start getting international results soon. I'm also delighted with the results our youngsters put in this weekend. Jessica, Fleur and Max are part of our development squad and will act as an inspiration to the rest of the team."

Roberto Pavoni (16) from the Brentwood Swimming Club broke 2 British Age Group records at this week’s Queensland Championships in Brisbane – Australia. He took Gold in the 200 Fly, 200 and 400 Individual Medley, breaking the 200 fly (2.02.17) and 400 I.M. (4.23.04) British records. These times, together with the 200 I.M. (2.05.51) are currently the fastest in Europe and amongst the very top in the World. The event, which was watched by several Thousand spectators, is attended every year by the top British, Australian and Pacific countries. Roberto, who will be based for 2 years from January at the Offshore Centre on the Gold Coast, capped an incredible year which saw him win Essex, East Region, British and European Championships breaking several records in the progress. He is now unbeaten in the Medley event at all levels and distances for the last 3 years. This is testimony to the excellent work by his Head Coach Terence Vincent and the support received within the Club.

The club was recently surprised to learn that it had been nominated for an Eastern Counties Gymnastics Association annual award.

To date we are still not sure who it was that nominated us but the icing was certainly put on the cake when we received a certificate for being "Small Club of 2008" because of our success in "getting gymnasts selected for international competition as well as providing general classes for the community", together with a cheque for £100.

Champions Academy

During the school holidays Champions Academy held a 2 day basketball camp at Campion School for children in school years 2-7. Over 50 children attended on each day of the camp, ranging from beginners to ‘Havering Fire’ players who have been attending Champions Academy sessions for over a year.

The camp is part of a new basketball development programme being run by Champions Academy in partnership with the Campion School.

Head Coach James Merchant, who has been working in local primary schools in Havering for over 2 years, said “Campion School have provided us with an exciting opportunity to expand our basketball programme in Havering and get more young people enjoying the sport.”

Tour of Flanders Sportive

Bikers,
You will have heard mentions of a weekend trip to ride the Tour of Flanders on the 4th April 2009.
We will be riding the 80 miler, NOT the full distance which is way too hard for this time of year. (legs are still warming up) but there are a lot of cobbles and then there is the ‘wall’ to climb, famed for its 1:24 cobble hill !!!!
There are already 8 riders going and 4 possibles, and some rooms reserved. The plan is to travel over Friday night, ride the event on Saturday, celebrate that evening in Glendene fashion, and watch the pro race the next day, travelling back Sunday afternoon.
You can enter the event on line. The link is below for your information and action.
It would be good to know that you are going, so we can ensure everyone meets up and/or travels together. Sharing cars can be dealt with once numbers are known.
Those 8 who have already booked, can assume a room is reserved for them. There will be two rooms spare.
